Please don’t feel intimidated by the idea of installing studio equipment or my track record of getting an agent! I started my voice-over business in the last millennium, and things change in the industry every day! 🙂

The cost of home recording equipment has dropped significantly since I started and continues to do so every day. Look at Pat Fraley’s The Gypsy’s Guide to Professional Home Recording for great info on a quick, low-cost studio set-up, as well as guidance on self-direction. (Please tell him I referred you.)

For more in-depth coverage of the subject, I recommend Harlan Hogan and Jeffrey Fisher’s The Voice Actor’s Guide to Home Recording. Both books are terrific resources for the voice artist’s library.

It’s a global marketplace, with an ever-widening span of opportunity. You can get voice-over work without having an agent; agents are just one more avenue for obtaining work. You may get representation instantly, or it may take a while, depending on a wide array of factors. It’s also quite common to have agents in more than one city since you can submit auditions via e-mail.

Each time I see his commercials I ask the TV why he insists on appearing in them himself. While his message is very memorable, it does not inspire me with confidence in his abilities. Instead, he reminds me of one of Lloyd Bridges’ illegitimate sons. Regardless, I get the point you’re making.

I have always wanted to do voice-over work, but am a little daunted by the idea of building a studio and not being able to get an agent for three years.
