Hi, Tim. You're right that lots of voice talent enjoy an apple or apple juice to balance the saliva. I stick with water. A trick I learned from Pat Fraley is get a small spray bottle that you can use to mist your mouth. It keeps you hydrated without giving you the throat gurgle you often get after drinking.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and happy new year!

Great tips Karen. Another good idea is either sipping apple juice (as pure as possible) or eating an apple (obviously not during the narration!).

Apple juice balances the saliva so that your mouth is neither to "dry" or too "wet", but balanced.

Hi Karen,

Just followed the link from your comment on The Rapid E-Learning Blog.

Thanks very much for this list, it's a great help. I particularly agree with point 3 that it's important to talk like you normally do, and not try and put on a speaking voice or do a Bart - you'd just sound daft!

I'll add your blog to my list of "blogs followed" if I may?

Hi, James. Thanks for stopping by the blog with such an interesting observation and useful tip.

I don't actually do a Bart impression. When studying character voices with the amazing and delightful Pat Fraley, I learned that it's so much better to create your own characters than to imitate someone else. I look forward to the day that people recognize my voice because they have heard me in an audiobook, TV show or TV commercial.

Best wishes for your continued success!

Good info Karen!
My biggest problem tops your list. Don't rush the words. It's not so much an issue when actually recording a gig since I can focus on the script and get into a zone. I notice it when I'm submitting endless auditions for online sites. To jump from a wisecracking cat to a medical narration in a matter of minutes plays havoc with timing.
I've found that grouping auditions into similar reads helps a lot.
I'd love to hear your Bart!
